Interview about Emission

(Subtitle in English)

Gold Town Games vies to become world leader for mobile sports manager games. And they are well on their way.

With the launch of yet another new global mobile game, Skellefteå company Gold Town Games is entering an exciting phase of expansion. In order to finance their growth, the company is now strengthening the fund with an issue.

The market for mobile games is notably competitive, but hardly saturated. With each new smartphone model, millions of phones are rolled out to first-time users - especially in emerging markets. The cost of being connected and participating in the digital world is priceless today.

Based on this potential global market, entrepreneur Pär Hultgren and his team embarked on an ambitious project to develop the world's best mobile games for sports managers. It is a growing category comprised of more complex sports games, where the user does not have to play quickly with low latency. Instead, it is about strategically and methodically building up one’s team over time - recruiting players and investing in the club arena to slowly but surely enter the league system and thereby advance to the high stakes finals.

Interview about Gold Town Games

“ We want to serve as the global leader in managerial games in several sports, so the lessons we draw from having two products on the market will be extremely valuable in the future. ”

Building success on experience

Within two years of being founded in 2015, Gold Town Games released its first game, World Hockey Manager. The game quickly became a leader in its niche, and has since been downloaded more than a million times. A staggering figure for most app developers, but for Gold Town Games, it's just the beginning of a bigger journey.

- “From the beginning, we hit the market with a good product within a niche. Now we know and understand how things work and what challenges exist. I view us as mountaineers. We’ve succeeded the first summit, and now we’re entering a new mountain range.

This new mountain range's first peak means taking taking on an even bigger market: football. The sequel beta version of World Football Manager was launched in a few markets in 2019, transitioning from a purely European presence to a wider global audience by the end of the year. The idea is that both games should strengthen and complement each other.

Scalability platform

The business model is based on a so-called freemium model, which means that the games are free to download and play. As a user, you can then purchase virtual currencies within the game to, for example, upgrade one’s arena, recruit better players, and/or speed up certain processes.

An important prerequisite for future scalability is the in-house developed digital platform W3XM, the game's crucial backend that’s constantly being updated and optimized. “Our vision does not stop at two games,” says Pär Hultgren.

- The platform is modular and forms the basis for adapting to more games in the future. Once we have reached profitability – hopefully by the end of Q2 2020 - we will start focusing on Game Three of the series.

What sport will be chosen for the third series remains to be seen, and Pär Hultgren does not dare to promise too much. But the fact remains that there are a number of major team sports with a global following who may be interested in managerial games - American football, baseball, volleyball, handball and basketball are just some examples. Motorsports is also of great global interest and could work for games at a strategic level.

Located in ”the best place”

At present, about a third of the company's employees work overlaps with both World Hockey Manager and World Football Manager. The economies of scale increase with each new release, while the games can aid each other in new markets.

- The World Football Manager is likely to reach many fans in classic football countries such as Germany, England and France with countries such as USA, South Korea and Japan being of growing interest - not to mention, China! Pär Hultgren believes that Gold Town Games are at a very interesting stage right now.

- We want to serve as the global leader in managerial games in several sports, so the lessons we draw from having two products on the market will be extremely valuable in the future. In addition to introducing World Football Manager globally, we will also promote the hockey game more, as we see that it still has great potential to grow. We are facing a very exciting future, and welcome any and everyone who wants to join us on this journey.
